Types of pigmentation we see
Pigmentation simply means areas of skin that look darker than the skin around them. It is one of the most common reasons clients visit Glow By Yaz in Bletchley, Milton Keynes, and it is rarely one single thing. The type of pigmentation decides which treatment is likely to suit you, which is why Yaz always starts with a consultation.
Melasma
Melasma appears as soft-edged brown or grey-brown patches, often on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip and chin. It is linked to hormones (pregnancy, contraception, hormone therapy), sunlight and visible light, heat and genetics, and is more common in women and in medium to darker skin tones. It is a long-term condition: treatments can reduce its appearance, but it can return, so maintenance is part of every plan.
Sun damage and sun spots
Sun spots (sometimes called age spots or solar lentigines) are flatter, more defined marks on areas that have seen years of sun, such as the face, chest and hands. They tend to appear from your thirties onwards.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is the mark left behind after a spot, a graze, a burn or irritation has healed. It is particularly common in darker skin tones and after breakouts. If you still have active breakouts, calming those comes first; see our acne treatment for blemish-prone skin.
Any mark that is changing in size, shape or colour, bleeding or itching should be checked by your GP before any cosmetic treatment. Yaz will refer you if she is unsure about a lesion.
Cosmelan, Mesopeels and BioRePeel compared
These are the three main professional options we use for pigmentation. The guide below is general; your consultation will confirm which suits your skin.

Pigmentation treatment for darker skin tones
Medium and darker skin tones are more likely to develop pigmentation, and more likely to react to aggressive treatment by producing more of it. That makes a careful, gradual approach essential. In practice this means preparing the skin before treatment, choosing peel strengths conservatively, avoiding unnecessary heat and trauma, and sometimes testing a small area first.
Yaz treats a wide range of skin tones and will explain which options suit yours and why. If she feels a treatment carries too much risk for your skin, she will tell you.
Your pigmentation plan at Glow By Yaz
Your £20 consultation, in clinic in Fenny Stratford or by video, is where the plan begins. Yaz looks closely at your pigmentation, asks about hormones, medication, sun habits and the products you use, and explains the realistic options, timings and costs. You leave with a written plan and time to decide.
Most plans combine an in-clinic treatment with a home-care routine, because what you do every day between appointments has a large effect on how pigmentation behaves.
Maintenance and daily SPF
Whatever treatment you choose, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is non-negotiable, all year round and even on cloudy days in Milton Keynes. Visible light and heat can also darken melasma, so a tinted mineral sunscreen, a hat and shade all help.
- Apply a generous amount of SPF 30 or higher every morning, and reapply when outdoors
- Keep up the home-care products Yaz recommends
- Book maintenance appointments as advised, often before and after summer
- Tell Yaz about changes in contraception or other medication
